Weapons in our Systems
Sifu Dee training his Three Section Staff, he started this weapon after becoming a blue Sash Student
We have many weapons in our system, not to use against anyone, but to learn their every motion in order to defend against it. You would be very surprised training with lets say a staff for a year. You learn all of it's basic motions. You learn all of the basic blocks and strikes, and you learn many single man techniques in the air to learn how to handle any of the staffs. We have long staff, short double handed staff, we have the three section staff, and double ended staff, and a few more. We have spear forms, some amazing Ying Yee Sword forms, which actually resemble a machete here in Canada, but the metal is of the best quality. We also use knives, not only self defense techniques against a knife, but also how to throw a knife. When Sifu Fiedler first started to learn weapons from GM Chow, GM Chow asked the young Sifu Fiedler if he knew any weapons, and of course Sifu Fiedler said no. After Sifu Fiedler asked GM Chow what type of weapons he taught, GM Chow also told Sifu Fiedler that he taught throwing knives. Right away Sifu Fiedler jumped in and told GM Chow that he could throw knives really well, and threw knives since he was a child. Oh Boy, Sifu Fiedler put his foot in his mouth on this one, when GM Chow told Sifu Fiedler to show him how he threw, Sifu Fiedler put the blade in his hand and showed GM Chow the motion of how he would throw. Sifu Fiedler was embarrassed right away, you see Sifu Fiedler thought he knew it all when it came to throwing knives and was so excited to show GM Chow, and right away Sifu Fiedler is told he is wrong, not only told he is wrong, but shown why. This is what was so special about the way that GM Chow taught, No matter what he taught, or said, he always gave an example, or showed why. And this is what rubbed off on Sifu Fiedler, he taught the very same way. First of all, no one is to hold the knife by the blade. Think about it like this, if the handle of the knife is sticking out of the sheath, then what are you going to do, grab the knife out of the sheath, and with two hands turn it around to grab the blade and then throw it. Now look at it like this, the knife handle is sticking out of the sheath, and when one needs to throw it, you grab the knife with your throwng hand and throw it right away, aiming it with the hand that is throwing right from the sheath, now think of the time that is saved, and think about this and try to picture it, if you threw knives as a child and you to were taught was is called the English way of throwing knives, try it like this, but don't try to throw it right from the sheath from the beginning. Take your throwing knives and set up a target, and then practise practise, and practise more, try to throw twenty minutes a day, and you will be surprised at the skill level in six months of throwing. Once you are used to throwing it properly, that is when you can grab the knife out of the sheath and throw it into the target all in one motion. Again once you master this skill, you go onto doing a shoulder roll, and when you come up onto your feet, your knife is already on its way to the target.
