Tai Liu Chuan Fa in Canada
There were two schools teaching Tai Liu Chuan Fa in Canada. Both were teaching under the hand of Sigung Tallbear. Only one school is still teaching under the direction of Sigung Tallbear, and that is the school in Ontario called Ky Moo Kwan. Ky Moo Kwan, is not the name of the style or system taught. It is only the name of the school. Ky meaning the man who brought these amazing arts to Pembroke, Moo, meaning the most in martial arts. "Moo", in Chinese means most. When we say that we know the most in martial arts, does not mean we are saying we know more then others, or worse saying we know everything. What is being stated is that in GM Chow's art, he always said that training in this form of Ying Yee, you have a wealth of knowledge not taught in most other schools, teaching students a well rounded instruction in Wing Chun technique, Choy Lay Fut. technique, Hung Kuen Technique, Iron Body forms, Northern Long Fist technique, Tam Tiu Technique, White Eyebrow technique, and only after a student passed his or her test in these styles, were they able to start the Taoist Ying Yee Animal forms. This combined with Tai Liu Chuan Fa, is absolutely amazing amount of Chinese martial arts knowledge. However what is most important is to keep these systems exactly as they were taught to Sifu Fiedler Another point to make, we do not mix martial arts. What I mean by this is we do not practise Ying Yee on the same night as Tai Liu Chuan Fa, or Hung Kuen. Each and everyone of these Chinese Martial arts has to be taught in a completely different time frame or course. Some could look above and become confused by what was just said. Why, because of all the arts one has to learn in Ying Yee before actually starting the animal forms. What GM Chow's teacher did was take all of the Chinese Martial arts of the day, back in Hong Kong. What I mean by this is all the martial arts that were making big noise at that time in Hong Kong. On one hand, Wing Chun was winning many of the street fights back then, at the same time Northern Long Fist, and Choy Lay Fut., were also doing very well on the streets of Hong Kong back in the fifties and sixties. These Martial arts are completely different from each other, but both were coming out on top of all the street fights, which were really illegal fights on roof tops, or other private areas where one master of an art would fight against another master in an art, to see who's art would come out on top. It was a very wild time in Hong Kong back at that time. And that is the point behind why to learn these arts, and what I mean by learn them, is not the whole style, or system. That is not what I mean at all, when looking at what makes Wing Chun so famous, or so sought after. Yes, the trapping techniques, sticking techniques, one inch punch. In the Long Bridge arts, the hand motion called, " Kao, Sao, Chap", which was a Long Bridge round house, downward back hand, turning into a long panther fist technique to front, each one turning into the next. The Kao, Sao, Chap, had to be practised in a straight line side ways. Walking in a leading horse stance, you had to block, attack, step all at the same time, left, or right, and doing those three techniques over and over until you had it. With the White Eyebrow, again what was it famous for, for one thing it was known as a very no nonsense martial art. Plus White Eyebrow itself had taken some of the best parts of both North and South China to create White Eyebrow Kung Fu. White Eyebrow was also very famous for it's Phoenix eye fist techniques and its knowledge of how to use Short bridge, and long bridge seamlessly. As you can see, these pieces of knowledge from the various arts, would give a very good foundation for any student wanting to learn. This way the master of Ying Yee, knew that his student had a very well rounded understanding of the best arts of the day, and could learn to defend themselves against these types of styles and systems. You see it is the difference that makes the difference in the long run, people throughout history have been frightened of the unknown. With that in mind, you have to make the unknown, known, and you will never be frightened of it again. Once you know it's every movement, it's technique, and how it moves, you are not frightened any more at all. Now that I explained what Sifu Fiedler learned from GM Chow before going to learn from GM Tallbear, I can start to explain how we teach these arts. When a student first starts, they can only learn one art, and that is Hung Kuen, or Kempo. By the time a student reaches the level of Brown belt, they have basic knowledge in most areas of martial arts. Basically a very well rounded course to allow students to understand many forms of movement. And another thing to remember about the martial arts, what is basic in one art, is advanced in another. Or what is advanced in one, is basic in another. This is something to talk about in another area, but here, we will keep on the topic of what Sifu Fiedler learned from Sigung Tallbear, and GM Chow, and how he taught it here when he came. We teach exactly how it was taught when Sifu Fiedler was teaching it. To this day it makes a lot of sense to keep these styles separate from each other, and to always make sure to practise one or the other. Sometimes this for six months at a time, only Tai Liu Chuan Fa is taught, then for another six months only Ying Yee is taught. The reason for this is to keep each one separate from the other. Many times when students learn everything all mixed up together, they come out with an art that does not resemble where it came from, how it moved, or blocked, or punched, or kicked, it developed into a whole knew art, which is something Sifu Fiedler said to never allow. He always told us to make sure to always keep GM Tallbear's art separate from GM Chow's art. This way we give the most respect to both masters, and their past masters for all time. To explain this in another way, what would happen if you put Ying Yee and Tai Liu together, you would have just another mixed up Canadian Kung Fu, and that is not what we want, we want to maintain Chinese Kung Fu the way it was taught in that country, and teach it exactly how it was taught to us, for our students. It will be our students who will in turn teach Tai Liu Chuan fa exactly how it was taught to Sifu Fiedler by GM Tallbear, and when being taught Ying Yee, they will teach Ying Yee exactly how GM Chow taught Sifu Fiedler, this way we preserve the wisdom of the ancients. Back to Tai Liu Chuan Fa. I had to explain what I did just now because this is exactly what was taught to Sifu Fiedler before going to learn Tai Liu Chuan Fa, and this is again very important for all of the students to understand this. Also to understand why not mix martial arts, why it is so important to keep them separate. I will come back to write more about this. Did you know the Chinese Martial arts are Five Thousand Years of Age. Did you know that the Buddhist styles of Kung fu did not come until two thousand years ago. But the Chinese had Taoist arts long before this time, and it was developing its own unique systems. Ba Gwa, Ying Yee, and Tai Chi Chuan. These are all known as Internal systems, but not just because of being, "Internal Chinese Marital arts", but also because they were original Chinese martial arts developed solely in China, and did not come from India as with the Buddhist arts. Throughout all the years of development, they say that there came a time in China in the 16th century when Chinese Kung Fu hit it's zenith, it could not develop into a higher level. They say that the masters in and around that time, were completely incredible, in fact that is also in the same time frame when those few famous Buddhist Monks defeated a whole army. There are many wild stories, many were actually proved to be true also. But some if you were told, you would say no way that could not be true. What I can say to counter this is what if there was no TV, or Radio, no entertainment at all, how good would your skill be if you trained every single day because your life depended on it. You lived in a time when a good martial artist would have a good position in government, or army. It was also in and around the time when some incredible Chinese martial arts were still being developed on the battle field, you also have to remember that this is a time before the gun. This being a very important aspect, because once the gun came to be, that was when the martial arts stopped being as important as it was. That was when it also almost went into complete obscurity. After the Boxer rebellion, was a very bad time for China, but some of the stories that come out of that time, are again completely amazing. Hard to believe, but true. Still lots more to come. Still have not touched on what I am trying to explain, please come back, lots more to come
And how we teach Tai Liu Chuan Fa in Canada.
Two of the proudest Tai Liu Chuan Fa students in Canada Sifu Dee and Sifu Gallant with their Black Belt Diploma's, they both passed their test in 2002
Sifu Dee in centre, all of his students back five years ago. Out of the four students, three made it to black belt They are not training Tai Liu Chuan Fa
Sihing Mathieu and Sihing Sutton Before Sihing Mathieu, and Sihing Sutton joined our club, they were highly trained black belts from other schools. They started with us at white belt, and now they are black belts in Hung Kuen. This is the requirement in order to start either Ying Yee or Tai Chi Chuan, or Tai Liu Chuan Fa. These two did not even have to think about what they wanted to learn next, they picked the first Tai Liu Chuan Fa course. Since they started the Tai Liu, they have noticed many changes in their technique. One of the amazing by products of learning Tai Liu is a noticeable change in their hand speed and accuracy. When training Tai Liu Chuan Fa, there are many types of training methods to increase hand speed, also to learn how to aim at targets before you even have time to think about where you are going to strike, you have already finished the technique without thought. They both agree this is one of the most amazing by products of their new found system of Chinese Martial arts. They have also noticed that when they train what they were taught years earlier in other styles, is also coming out much faster and with excellent accuracy. Most schools start a martial arts frame that looks the same, with the three basic blocks, kicks, punching techniques and other, that is why we believe that Hung Kuen gives the students an excellent foundation before starting more advanced type Chinese Martial arts. Both Sihing Sutton, and Sihing Mathieu, are students that most teachers would be proud to have. We know how fortunate we are.
Much more to come dealing with Tai Liu Chuan Fa in Canada
