Self Defense Techniques Self defense is a very important aspect of any martial arts program. Many of the traditional martial arts systems have self defense techniques, and some of the new styles that have gone towards sports, still have some self defense, enough to carry you through. So with that I can say that if you want to learn self defense. When you go to join some school, ask if they teach self defense, then ask if they teach women's self defense, if they teach the same self defense techniques to women as they do men, as they do to children. Now I have just stated three different types of people, all with different heights, different weights, and even different reasons as to why someone would want to hurt them. Men are much bigger then women, most are stronger then women, children are smaller then women, most children if not all are not as strong as women or men. So what this means, is they all have to learn different methods in order for the technique to work with an exactness that only comes from someone with knowledge to teach this way. The Grand Master of Tai Liu Chuan Fa, is where I truly gained my absolute self Defense program, it was ten times more extensive then anywhere I had learned to date. Plus two years after starting with Sigung Tallbear, I was asked to come around with him to teach the different classes. Some of the classes he taught were out of the club. Like when teaching at the lock up for those wild teens I talked about in this web site. I also learned how to teach women's self defense in such a professional manor way that even today it freaks me out when I think about it. How fortunate I was to have been able to constantly go up and up and up when learning the Chinese Martial arts. First I went to learn from a school that taught Hung Kuen. There is or was some converse about what style I started in, it was Grand Master Chow who told me it was Hung Kuen, he also noticed that inside the Hung Kuen, were three basic but excellent Tam Tiu Forms, " They called them hung forms", but the main thing about this Hung Kuen system, is it had everything, every thing was basic, but it did cover grappling, it did cover ground techniques, enough to get on your feet again. Also they taught flying kicks, punching and kicking techniques that kept it exactly the way it was when it was taught hundred of years ago. Unlike some styles that after a few generations of bad heads of the systems, like a son who never practised, but when his father died, he wanted the fame and glory without working for it, it is a very long road to success in the martial arts, and my idea of what success is, compared to what your idea of what success really is, is two different things. But to get back at what I was trying to say, after being in the Hung Kuen for some time, I started to learn Ying Yee, even though I had moved in with my Ying Yee teacher, he told me to keep on going to the Hung Kuen school for experience in sparing and working with other students, he had not a school at that time. After a few years of learning Wing Chun, Choy Lay Fut., Hung Gar, White Eyebrow, Tam Tiu, Northern Long fist, and Iron Body and Iron Palm training, was when I was allowed to start the Ying Yee training from GM Chow. He wanted me to have a good grasp on wing chun, and all of the other arts that I talked about, because as he said, a man or women fears the unknown. This is natural, so what to do about it, look at what the enemy is using, with wing chun, you had to watch out for getting trapped, or being punched with the rapid rolling center punch, or with Northern Long fist, it was always the long bridge techniques with wide open arms, a very unique method of sparing, and all the time I was learning so much. After a few years of Ying Yee, was when I was able to meet Grand Master Tallbear, and start to learn from him, and that was when I thought to myself, Oh My God, this is so unique, so unusual. This is the art that I will learn, and I will learn well, and you know what, years later I look back and know that I did well for this art. I worked my heart out for GM Tallbear, wanted him so bad to teach me. I knew he was setting me up with other students to learn forms and techniques for a reason, to see if I would stick it out with them, and I did. After another two years, I was under the wing of Grand Master Tallbear, and the luckiest man in the world. I love traditional martial arts, and you can't get more traditional then Tai Liu Chuan fa, it is amazing. However even though it is traditional, GM Tallbear has always had a tournament seen, and was always into that type of thing. I did not like to go to those things, but did if he asked me, I went. I love true traditional martial arts, no commercialism, no new fangled martial sport, not for me, no thanks. For what you want, you have to search deep inside your heart as to what you want from the martial arts and go from there. There are six hundred recognized martial arts systems in China alone, how many do you think there are in all of the Asian countries, it would be truly amazing. There are martial arts styles or systems, that I love that come from Northern India, and from Western China, Cambodia, and Lao's, Thailand, and of course Japan. But it seems that China has my heart, my soul and it always will. I find that the Chinese martial arts are exactly what fits me like a glove. What you have to do is find a certain type of martial art or sport that fits you like a glove. Don't take some type of martial art because someone you know is doing it, that is the wrong type of reason, you have to make sure that you truly love what you are training, if this is the case, you will do so well with it, that with in a short time you will have become expert in your field. All it really takes in a style is three years, in a system, it takes ten years. I would start by looking all over the web and reading about different types of styles or systems, one might find you, and it will be love at first sight. Getting back to self defense, why it is so very important is that it is hands on with our type of methods for teaching students, this is the very first method where they touch each other. Of course they are told to be very careful, and to understand that they need their partners as much as their partners need you. Once that is understood, the students go through some of the easier self defense techniques to see exactly how it feels, and to know that it does not take much to cause someone pain. Again you do not want to cause your partner pain, because when two students are training together, something that is hands on, they both have to be very careful. If one of the students all of a sudden goes stiff, he can cause himself or his partner pain, so with that said, please remember to stay soft, relaxed and calm. As long as you both stay relaxed throughout the exercise nothing will go wrong.
