More About Pembroke Soon

Pembroke in the 1960s

Pembroke is a wonderful little town, with very nice people. Everyone that moves here from other areas, always say how much they love the people, the nature, and the general beauty of this area, with things to do all year round. Pembroke is very close to Algonquin Park, and is also right across the Ottawa river from Quebec. The part of Quebec that Pembroke is across from, is very low in population, and is a nature wonderland. Regardless of which direction we drive, we can be in the woods, with in five to ten minutes. We have skiing, fishing, a beautiful marina, most of all we are known for our Fiddle and Step dancing contest held at the end of each summer. Pembroke has always been a hockey town, with the Pembroke Lumber Kings being a very big team for the last hundred years. Did you know that Pembroke was one of the first places with Electric lights in all of Canada. Also that Pembroke was almost going to be the Capital of Canada a very long time ago, instead Ottawa became Capital of Canada. A very beautiful area along the Ottawa river one hundred miles east of Pembroke is where Ottawa is.

One block from Downtown Pembroke, you see Pembroke's older style buildings from a time gone bye.

Pembroke is also twelve miles east of Algonquin Park, one of the most beautiful parks in Canada. I have to say however that no matter where you go in Canada, there is always something to see. Whether you go to Nova Scotia, or Percy Rock in Quebec, Stanley Park in Vancouver or Camping some where along the trails on Vancouver island. I Should have mentioned somewhere in the prairies, because in all honesty, some where down by Red Deer, there is a park called "Dinosaur Park" something like that, and it actually looks like you are walking on some different planet, it is so beautiful, so yes you can go anywhere in Canada and see things that no other area has, all of Canada is beautiful, so no matter where you live, always take a long look at what is beautiful for your area, and realise that the grass is not greener no matter where you live. Now is that not the truth. That is why when Sifu Fiedler was young, he set out to go from sea to sea. He swam in both Oceans, had to wear a sweat suit in the Atlantic, it was freezing. Sifu Fiedler says here he looked for Big foot along this trail close to Clear water, and Harrison Hot Springs, another beautiful area of Canada, I wish everyone could see. Did you know that the highest mountain in Quebec is not really that high. At least not compared to Mount Washington, across the boarder in U.S.A. I was so surprised when I seen peaked Mountains in the East it was wild. There has been a weather station up that mountain for years and years recording the winds and weather. They have the highest recorded winds in history on that mountain. But what I thought when I read that was if they had a weather station on top of Mt. Everest, would it not be Mount Everest with the highest recorded winds. At least that is what I thought. Or put it this way, even in Canada, Mount Robson, that is one of the biggest mountains close to Jasper. What if they had a weather station on top of that mountain, would they not have the highest recorded winds, I hope someone hears my point and catches what I am saying, because I think I have my self tongue tied now. Driving through the lower part of the Rockies, we drove through this place called Golden. You want to talk about an amazing little place to live. Driving through there is treacherous. We would always try as hard as we could to get ourselves in between two transports and cruise with them, right through to Vancouver, or back to Edmonton. Some times we would take the North Highway and drive threw Jasper, Kamloops, and down to Vancouver. Or we would take the lower highway and drive right threw to Calgary, over to Banff, through Golden, and down to Vancouver, those drives I will never forget. We were so young and so full of energy. We would see some rock out crop way up high, stop the car on the side of the road, and run up to the rocks like little crazy guys, screaming and laughing and having so much fun. We would do this to stretch our legs in between coffee stops. But the one thing I can say, no matter where I was in Canada, or the United States, I always dreamed of Pembroke, and the Ottawa valley, the most caring, compassionate, and wonderful people in the whole wide world.

Here is the same bridge today

Sifu Charles Croy is in foreground, practising his sling training. He actually was very good at it right from the start, where as it takes others a very long time to get the feel of this type of weapon. If you are wondering what the sling is, it is what David used to kill Goliath. Remember that weapon, it is the same weapon that all sheep farmers use when they are out in the field with their flocks, they still use this same weapon to this very day in the Middle east to scare away or kill a wolf.

Murals on many of Pembroke's downtown walls

All of the Mural's are done with Pembroke's history in mind. Each of the murals are beautiful and have beautified Pembroke's downtown.

From where I am standing above, is where I turned around and took a picture towards the direction of where Pembroke is, Pembroke is only a few miles from this place under the Provincial Bridge.

Pembroke's little board walk down at the Marina. A few years back, Pembroke's planning committee voted to start beautifying the the Marina area, and to date, they are really doing an excellent job. Everyone from the person who got the coffee to the hardest worker, should be commended for what they have been doing. I have to say that what they are doing is a work in progress and every single year they surprise us with another station along the walking paths down by the river. Every few years I will go down and take more pictures to add here.

From the benches above all facing the river, this is what you see when the sun starts to go down, it is beautiful.
