Herbal Medicine

Introduction

Ky Moo Kwan was started by Grand Master Chow and Sifu Fiedler back in 1981. The art that GM Chow taught Sifu Fiedler was Ying Yee up to the level of Master Instructor from 1974 to 1993, twenty years of instruction from one of the best masters in traditional Chinese Martial arts. GM Chow also taught Sifu Fiedler Wing Chun, Choy Lay Fut., Hung Gar, White Eyebrow, Northern Long Fist, Tam Tiu, Northern Eagle and Mantis, special weapons training, from throwing knives to Chinese Forks, Spear, short and long staff, long and short sword, single and double edged swords  and many many more.

GM Chow still in Hong Kong, this is when he defeated all other practitioners at the only tournament he went to at sixteen yrs of age. He seen people with their arms broken still wanting to fight, he seen people with broken legs, and one with his eye hanging out of it's socket. That is the only type of tournament he would allow Sifu Fiedler to fight in, and they almost went to allow him to go into it. But other things were going on and we had so much to do to get ready for the performance we put on in Vegas. We always trained hard every day.

Only the System of Ying Yee was taught to Sifu Fiedler from start to finish, the other arts were taught only in pieces.  In fact the pieces that were taught to Sifu Fiedler from these arts were very important features of those arts. For instance if we take a look at Wing Chun, they have a totally different stance they call Goat Stance. They have more stances then Goat stance, however they use Goat stance more often then not. Wing Chun has fist techniques that are totally different than 99% of all other martial arts, and Wing Chun is known for it's one inch punch, it's trapping and sticking techniques and it's punching technique that twists upwards from the small two knuckles of the bottom of the fist, unlike most styles that hit with the top to large knuckles of the fist. With punching techniques like this, they call the top two knuckles as being hit with a hammer, and getting hit with the small bottom two knuckles is like getting hit with a nail.

Why learn an art like Wing Chun if you are not going to learn it from start to end, the reason is what it teaches in areas of the art that are truly unique, and it is those unique areas that can make it or break it when defending oneself. To have techniques that are totally different than what others use can take them by surprise. An art like Tam Tiu, known for its unique kicking was completely amazing also. Tam Tiu Kicks are very hard to learn from the start but if you practice over and over it starts to become second nature, and it takes a really good eye to see the difference between lets say a side kick in normal martial arts systems and the side kick in Tam Tiu, the Tam Tiu kicks all have half circles inside of them, not only that but some of the kicks have a shape like the Yin and Yang symbol, as the kick flies to its target, it goes one way half circle and without changing a beat, the kick starts to swerve to the other side making another half circle before hitting the target. Think about what this would do to your attacker. He would see the attack coming from one direction, as he went to block the punch or kick, it would not be coming from that direction, it would change in mid flight and catch your attacker on the other side. This is why these techniques were so amazing, they worked in real combat, in every battle for the last two thousand years in China, with trial and error, you can't imagine what they would have learned in those thousands of years of war.

GM Chow 1975, living with Sifu Fiedler a few brothers and sisters, by this time they rented a house because more brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles and their children came over, so we had to get a house, and you know what room they gave to the white guy, a walk in closet that had a window. Nothing fit into it except a bed, a very small bed. But Sifu Fiedler said he loved it, it was so peaceful upstairs, he always got good sleep.

There were other areas of training in the Chinese martial arts, some of the Taoist and Buddhist martial artists would practise deep deep meditations, taking it so serious they would go into caves and stare at walls for weeks, months, and some even years at a time. They had their students bring food and water, and what ever they needed to stay alive. They would only come back after they had the vision they needed to move on, or a sign from their over self, showing what needed to be accomplished next. Some of these martial artists would practise alchemy, and try to turn elements into different things, they were very advanced for the day, but still not enough to know exactly what they were doing in many areas. However as the western Alchemists were more interested in finding how to make Gold. Where as the Chinese Alchemists would try to find immortality, and that is what killed the first Emperor of China. He kept on trying to find a way to cheat death, he had the top Alchemists of the day, but it was two thousand years ago. At the same time the Emperor was trying to find a way to live forever and his doctors or Alchemists wanted to stay safe with what they were giving him, they knew different things in certain doses would cause death, and they knew that if they used some things in little amounts could make someone sick or superhuman, but after the illness they could be healed from many different ailments or even make their kung fu very powerful for a few days, using Ginseng and other herbs.

Sifu Fiedler said he had a drink of real Ginseng, sent over from Hong Kong to GM Chow for his sister when she was going to give birth. For the Chinese it is very important to give the best Ginseng for birth. There was around a third left, and they gave it all to Sifu Fiedler after GM Chows sister had enough. The first day after Sifu Fiedler said he felt really sick, ill feeling inside his stomach. The very next day when he got out of bed, he first noticed that he was taller, then he noticed a bounce to his step. He went outside, did a form, and could not believe the power or the speed that came from his body and mind. It was truly remarkable, it lasted for two more days. When Sifu Fiedler said he felt taller, he was not really taller, it's that he felt taller, that feeling stayed with him for three days. GM Chow paid five hundred Canadian dollars, if you seen that type of root, you would never forget it's texture and weight. When you see all that cheap Ginseng they sell to us round eyes, it does not even smell as good, or the texture is dry and weightless, unlike the real Ginseng which has the texture of wood with oil in it.

One year into teaching Sifu Fiedler it was 1975

Talk about get off track, going back to the Emperor of China, there was one method that was using Lead, or was it Mercury, I guess no one would really know until his body is found. But he was the one who ordered his physicians to give him a higher dose because he really thought they were close enough to make him have eternal life. What he got instead was death. They begged him not to take that dose, and they told him that he felt better not because of how much they put in, it was because they put less in then earlier. He would not listen, and was found dead the next day. For months the poison built up in his system, until it became to toxic, and he came to a very terrible end. To die like this is hell on earth, the pain is unimaginable, and the vomiting, the convulsions, and the dry heaving when his stomach was empty.

GM Chow's animals were second to none

Sifu Fiedler met GM Chow where he worked in a hospital, in fact he met GM Chow at the most important time ever. As he was being kicked out from where he lived because he was training Kung Fu. The people where Sifu Fiedler lived were fanatic Christians, they told him he was training things from the devil and could not live there any more, it was a Christian house, only Christians were allowed to move into this place. Sifu Fiedler got along with every one and loved it at that place, every single night people went from room to room asking questions about the Bible, praying together and so on. Only thing is they were fanatic, and being fanatic can not bring anything that is good, especially religion, just like we see now with the Taliban. Some would say rubbish, how could Christians do anything wrong, even if they were fanatic, well what about Jim Jones, David Koresh, or killing doctors and nurses that work in Abortion clinics, I say they are ego centric, trying to make people believe what they believe. Sifu Fiedler back then was at the time trying to become a Missionary, that was his dream back at that time in his life, that was before GM Chow came into his life. Then when he had to move out of that house, GM Chow asked him to move in with him, only after knowing each other for two weeks, Sifu Fiedler moved in with his Grand Master In Kung Fu. Sifu Fiedler lived with Grand Master Chow and family for seven years, it was totally amazing to live with a Chinese Family, to eat with Chop sticks every day, to dress like Chinese, to learn how to talk Chinese, write Chinese, Sifu Fiedler took it very serious and loved learning what they were teaching him. Another amazing thing, were the children, trained in Herbal Medicine from the time they were around seven or nine, yes that young. They knew what to use for colds, or stomach ailments, and would make these herbal teas for their grand parents. I was astounded to see this, trying to look back at my age, and all I could remember was riding my bike, or playing down in the park. What a total difference in culture. They also went out to pick the herbs and then dry them. I was fascinated to learn that the Yellow flower in all of our yards called Dandy lines, it is good for many things. But mainly it is used for various stomach ailments.

Learning from Grand Master Chow taught Sifu Fiedler how to defend against weapons, first you learn every single aspect of that weapon, and then you start to see how you can easily defend yourself from that weapon, because you trained with it for a long time and know it's every motion, and that goes for many many different types of weapons, long, medium, and short weapons, throwing knives, spear, long and short staff, long and short sword, single and doubled edged swords, Chinese forks, and so many more. Learning the Chinese martial arts can teach you many subjects, it teaches you basic herbal medicine, which is usually the, "Dit Dat Jow", a medicine that is used to heal the hands from sand bag training and training the hands on wood, or healing small bone breaks and sprains in half the time it would take from wearing a cast on your wrist or arm or hand. Every time Sifu Fiedler would come home from the hospital with cast on his arm, the whole family of Chinese would take turns cutting my cast off. No matter if they could fix it or not, or even look at the injury and know what was wrong by experience, they still always had Sifu Fiedler go to hospital to make sure the injury they thought it was, really was. When he came home, off with the cast, and on with the, Dit Dat Jow, wrapping up my arm in bandages, and wrapping the herbal medicine into the bandages so that they would not get the bed dirty with medicine, also so that the medicine would be soaked enough to go into the wound, when something is broke, it swells, some of the Chinese Meds for breaks, open the pours even more, then another one of the herbs would go into the injury, right into the break areas, and it would push out any water, it would dissipate the bruise so that it would also heal twice as fast, just like a break. Plus you never had the problem of having a skinny arm when taking off the cast. GM Chow told me when I asked about the casts and why we had to wear them and they did not. If our doctors knew that this was true, why not allow us to not wear casts. You know the reason, Sifu Fiedler said he was so surprised to find that the reason for this is most people in the west do not listen to their doctors, in Asia, and all over Asia, people listen to every word the doctor tells them, and they respect their doctors, unlike here in the west.

If a student is to keep his hands healthy, meaning to take care of them when they bruise, that is why we use Dit Dat Jow, it dissipates the blood in the bruise and heals it much faster allowing you to train again much faster. Plus every time you use the Dit Dat Jow, it heals other areas of your hand, like the Chi Points, and blood vessels, cartilage, and any type of small bone damage. You also want your hands to look good your whole life, at the same time able to use your hands even when you are older, you have to learn how to use Dit Dat Jow herbal medicine. Sifu Fiedler told us that one of his friends who was in Sport Karate for Forty years, who hit wooden poles with rope around where they would hit it with fists. He did that all the time he was training, and after thirty years without using any herbal meds, he was unable to open and or close his hands any more, they were damaged beyond belief. He also told me he wanted to join Kung Fu because he had heard these things, but he was a black belt already when he had the chance, but because he was worried about loosing his seniority, he did not go. What he forgot is that time goes by fast, and if he had really been a good student of the martial arts, he would have excelled quickly and passed through the ranks just like everyone else that comes from other systems. There is another thing that Karate does not teach. The use of herbal meds, and other types of medicines like even to use Tiger balm, it helps warm up the large muscle groups when you have an excellent stretch and other types of work outs. All of these things you must use to make your training come along faster and to find the power that you do not know you have, and when it finally comes out, again you would be crazy with amazing thoughts of how you are going to use these new found powers. .

Various Stances from GM Chow

Any students learning from a real Grand Master in Chinese martial arts and staying with that teacher for over ten years, would never have to look at any fad or any other type of training. The reason for this is you learn basically every type of motion, every type of ground technique, but only to get up, not to lie on the ground, that is very dangerous for real self defense, think about it this way, you take one person to the ground, you put him in a lock or hold which takes two hands, and one of his friends sticks a knife in your back because your hands are busy with holding someone. Yes this is good for sports against one man in the ring, but not the streets. Many people actually think they could use this in a real fight on the streets. This is not only silly, but you would have to wonder who was the teacher teaching this kind of mess. Learning from a grand master in traditional martial arts would teach you excellent self defense, excellent grappling techniques which come from Eagle claw and Mantis, also nerve manipulation, and acupressure points in advanced Eagle and Mantis the basics would be how to attack the body cavities in a real situation using Eagle Claws or Mantis hands.

What I find very ridiculous is everyone coming onto the scene saying they have a new style that is completely new and was never thought of before. Well I have to say to this remark, the martial arts has been alive and well for over five thousand years, if you think anything anyone does this day and age has not been done before should really have a good look in the mirror. Over five hundred years ago, many of the martial arts schools had tournaments against each other on street corners high up on platforms. The only rule was for one to win they would have to push the other off of the platform, or kick or punch your opponent off of the platform, back hundreds of years earlier, they had Spears at the bottom of the platform, if you fell, you fell on the spears to your death.

The winner usually not only winning the match he or she was in, but also landing a job with the Emperor of China, or for the very wealthy who hired only the best to guard their caravans bringing merchandise from one area of China to the other. There were many bandits on the highways of old, without the best protection, they would be robbed, and worse killed.

Iron Palm training

We allow all of our students who pass behind us to learn exactly how we were taught, exactly how our Master was taught, and his Grand Master before him or her, going back thousands of years in some cases.  There are systems that are very old and very rare.  Starting around one thousand years ago when they were created it was found to be a much more affective method of martial art, only problem was it took longer to create great martial artists. Usually before being allowed to train Ying Yi, one has to learn a basic martial art to gain flexibility, self defense that works right away, and basic meditation, philosophy, and other.  When the student passed through all of his or her training, there were not to many that could defeat them. This became widely known, many people wanted to learn Ying Yee but they swore to keep it secret and it stayed that way until recently. Because of the length of time it has been taught, it was developed into many different systems, three main systems and many that were mixed with other internal arts like Tai Chi, Ba Gwa, Ba Ji, and others. Some Tai Chi Masters training Ying Yee, created something that was like both. Then a Ba Gwa Master training Ying Yee and again you would have a Ying Yee system with Ba Gwa in it. One thing I find amusing is all say they are the original, and they all say that they teach the proper method. As far as we are concerned, We love what we were taught from Gm Chow, at the same time, I was not there one thousand years ago, how can any one be sure as to what and who was first, who taught what, and when, all these answers cannot ever be known for sure unless we can talk to someone over a thousand years old that lived in China, I need first hand information, not fairy tales, or superstitious tales. Aside from that, who gives a you know what.

What you should care about is less talk, and more practise, less story making and more training.  After the Masters came home from wars and different skirmishes living in China for the past thousand years, they found that the Ying Yee made them superior in battle, it also gave them amazing healing affects from the training, the meditation techniques were relatively hidden from the population, as was the Chi Kung techniques and every other training method they had up their sleeves, until the 20th century.

We are also very fortunate to learn a Southern Eagle and Mantis system of Kung Fu, it was taught to our master. It is a very rare system that is soft like Tai Chi, hand attacks that strike nerves five times in one second, for instance first strike goes to eyes, then neck, then side of neck, then solar plexus, and groin, all in under a second. When we first seen a master do these techniques we almost started to laugh hysterical, reason being no one thought the Demonstration would be that totally mind blowing. First time you see these techniques from this type of Eagle and Mantis you are completely shocked by it. With attacks only to nerves, body cavities, and other sensitive areas of the body at the speed of a machine gun, it is pretty dramatic.

Sifu Fiedler and GM Chow

GM Chow is teaching Sifu Fiedler how to move together without causing each other injuries. Once the student learns this, is when the teacher starts to have a lot of fun.

Once GM Chow taught Sifu Fiedler to move with him exactly as he should be. Meaning to get a student to move to the proper direction, to make sure your student moves with you instead of against you. Again what does that mean, to work with instead of against, with something like sparing.

In the west, we are taught to fight against each other, we are taught to be competitive as children, over in the east, the children are taught so much more then our culture. And what is even more amazing, is the children are behaved and do not talk back to their parents. . But with real martial art, not sport, you are taught life and death, not fun and games. This type of training is completely different then training for sports.

GM Chow in Vegas

We have seen another type of system from a Mantis style, it is called Tai Mantis, but is completely different, only similarity is that it is soft, and it is a mantis style, remember that there are many mantis systems both North and South. Some are very well known, for instance, "Seven Star praying mantis", when we say Northern Eagle and Mantis, or Southern Eagle and Mantis we are talking about categories of systems, as there are many Northern and Southern Eagle and Mantis systems that come from both.
