Chinese Boxing Forms
Forms are a practice of motion, they start with the most basic motions strung together in sequence. Blocks, punching, stepping, kicking, jumping, striking, it teaches you to do every possible motion properly. As you become more confident in what you are doing. Your teacher will add breathing to your form. Remember when you started, your teacher tells you to breath natural, not to hold your breath, but to breath naturally. Once he sees that you are doing well with the motions, meaning not having trouble stepping, punching, blocking, all at the same time, not skipping a beat. I remember when I seen my first real form. I was awe struck, it was unreal, I Could not believe that the human animal could do such things, things that were so powerful, yet graceful, things that looked so deadly, and yet it had a beauty that you never ever seen in your life. I seen something that looked like forms, but they called it Kata, that was when I was in a sport karate style when I was twelve or thirteen years of age. I did not like the look of those movements, nor did they make sense to me. Even though I was that age, I knew that there was something wrong with what that style was doing. The strange thing is, that I did not know I was right until years later in Edmonton. I was at a tournament, we went to watch them all, and this one was something that made the people of Edmonton very angry. This sport Karate style was saying they were going to beat all comers, that they were putting on a karate fight, and it was going to be full contact. They also said that all kung fu styles should not bother to enter because the circles have no power. You would not believe what happened that day. You would not believe what I seen that day, it was so strange because how did I know, how did I know I was right, especially at that young age, how did I know that sport karate should never be used on the street. I will come back and explain what happened at that tournament when I went months later. I was shocked and I can tell you all of the fights that day brought the house down, it was a packed house and all because of what that Karate Master said. You see out west, is absolutely Chinese Martial arts orientated, and out east is more Karate, and less Kung Fu. I wish it was the other way around, but then again, had it been any other way, my life might not have taken the turn it did. Thank God that it did take the turn that it did, because had my life been any different, I would not have been taught what I was taught. Even to this day our standards are amazing compared to many of the places our students have gone when they had to go to university in the cities, they go out to try and find a good kung fu school, and all they find is kick boxing pretending to be a good kung fu school. Or they find some teacher that was taught Karate for twenty years, and Kung fu for two, and he says he is a Kung Fu teacher.
However that first time that I seen a Chinese form in motion, my mouth dropped that day. I was completely shocked, it was that beautiful, it was awesome. To have that type of power with a beauty that goes so far beyond the word, is absolute amazing. I remembering telling myself that with in six months, I would know that form, I would be able to do that form as well as the person I just seen do it. Well, I was right about learning it, but I was not right about when. It was around two years later when I learned that same form. That first Chinese Form that I seen that first time, I will never forget that day, that day that I was hooked on the Chinese Martial arts, all because of what I seen that day. It might not have happened that way at all either that day. The thing was, I was going around from club to club, not knowing where to join, and all of a sudden, I asked one of the instructors that was talking to me if he would do a form for me. He was a very nice person, and right away he told me he would show me their main form. Called a linking form, that is linked together once you are a black belt, you have to do all of the forms in one steady move, until you get to the end. Instead of learning a few moves in one form, and a few different moves in another form, this type of Kata was linked together, so that by the time you were a black belt, you would have to do the whole form, from start to finish, in one form, or Kata.
