Punching Tips
How to develop a powerful and fast punch. Not only a powerful and fast punch, but one that can also hit the target at any time. Anyone can have a fast punch, but if he or she does not know how to use it, what good does that do. Anyone can have tremendously powerful punching ability, what good does it do if you cannot hit someone with those powerful punches. There are methods trained by Monks and other persons throughout China's history. These methods have been passed on from father to son, Grand Master to Master, Teacher to Student and so on. Here are some of the best methods one could use to develop the most powerful, and fastest fists in the martial arts, below that, I will give you some tips on how to use your new found power and speed.
First are some methods to develop strength and power in your fingers, palms, fists, and arms. All of these methods are tried and true, and have been practiced throughout the centuries in China.
Working on Wooden poles or dummies can create power in your palms, and forearms.
Here Sifu Fiedler is working on his punching muscles using a pulley system, he was taught this by GM Chow, and swears by it, in fact it is one of the best methods to develop your arms for punching.
Here the pulley again, the picture above shows you Sifu Fiedler working on his front thrust punch, here in this picture Sifu Fiedler is working on his backhand strike.
Here is another pulley, this time from horse stance, pulling down on the rope, making sure to stay in deep stance, pulling down, then letting it go back slowly, then doing it over again, until you have done enough. You will feel when to stop. The nice thing about pulley's, it is so easy to buy a few things and you can make lots of different types for little cost. Compared to those shinny new machines that you use a few months then hide under the bed, throw in the garage, or attic, it makes much more sense to build your own for cheap, they work much better also.
Sand Bag Palm, is one of the best methods to develop your palm. If you are going to do it seriously, you need to buy herbal medicines. Ask you teacher, and the next time he or she is in China town, they will pick it up for you. This is another piece of equipment you can throw together with odds and ends. One thing to make sure to do, is cover your bag and do not let it get wet. Always cover it when not in use, and if it was wet when you were going to use it, don't. The reaon for this is the water can go into your pours when your hands become swollen from the training. This is why it is important to use the Dit Dat Jow, herbal meds, what it does it make sure no water builds up in your joints of fingers, wrist, all joints.
The one above is one of the hardest I found to do. It took me months to be able to put my feet up over my head with bare hands grabbing the rope. I remember when GM Chow first told me to do this one. I thought it would be like most things, which I found easy, because I was in shape. This one, no way, Oh My Gosh, you would not believe, my hands felt like they were on fire, they were screaming for me to stop, but all I knew was to keep on trying. Aside from that, every time with GM Chow, he would not allow me to stop in between something, I either did it, nor did not do it at all. So you can't even begin to imagine what I had to do in front of GM Chow, he was so mean, and yet I know now why, it was for my own good. But going back to grabbing onto rope with your bare hands, and holding the weight of your body up, oh boy, now once you can hold up your weight, that is when you have to make it tougher on yourself again. Each time something becomes easy, you have to make it harder, this is the only way to become stronger, faster, and more powerful. Good luck to all of you and again I please ask you, try the rope.
The picture above is another contraption easily made from garbage, Take two jugs the same size with good handles. What is good about two jugs that you can put water, or sand in to create more or less weight. This way you can work your way up to heavier weights, but in time.
Take you time with this one, it will develope great shoulder muscles, and is also great for your grip, and for your neck muscles.
Use an old feed bag, and fill it up with sand, or small rocks. Then practise your one inch punch hitting the rocks from only one inch away. Because it is from a close distance, you will not have a chance to accidently break your hand while training this one. But remember you have to build up slowly. Most people develop the top two knuckles only, we develop all four of the fist. The first two, index and middle finger. the second two is the Baby Finger and ring finger. These two sets of knuckles, should always be used to punch together. Index and middle finger together, and Baby finger knuckle and Ring Finger knuckle together for a different type of punch. Both can do a one inch punch. In fact because we have Wing Chun training, we can develop our baby finger and ring finger knuckles, twisting upwards into the target, basically called the, " One Inch Punch". Because of our Tai Liu Chuan fa training, we have learned to use a one inch punch with the Index finger knuckle and Middle finger knuckle together, twisting downwards into the target, causing internal damage, this punch in Tai Liu is called the Eagle Hand Drop. Both Amazing methods of developing the fist.
